A Guide to Coastal Seafood in Alibaug: What to Order and Why

← Back to the blog

Konkan coast seafood has its own vocabulary. If you are unsure what to order, this should help.

Pomfret

Probably the most prized fish on this coast. Firm white flesh, mild and slightly sweet, very few bones. It takes well to simple treatment — grilled with butter and lemon rather than buried in spice.

Our Grilled Pomfret is exactly that: cooked simply because good pomfret does not need help.

Rawas (Indian salmon)

Meatier and richer than pomfret, which makes it excellent for tandoor cooking — it holds up to high heat without drying out. Try the Tandoori Rawas if you like something with more body.

Prawns

The most versatile thing on any coastal menu. Butter garlic is the crowd-pleaser; Prawn Caldine, a mild Goan-style coconut curry, is the more interesting order if you want something regional.

Crab

More work to eat and worth it. Crab Curry here is the slow, hands-on option — order it when you are not in a hurry.

If you cannot decide

The Seafood Platter for two exists for exactly this problem. It is also the right call if one person at the table is a seafood sceptic and needs converting.
