The two default weekend escapes from Mumbai. They suit different moods.
Getting there
Alibaug — ferry from the Gateway to Mandwa, then a very short drive. The crossing itself feels like the start of the holiday.
Lonavala — expressway drive. Faster in theory, though weekend traffic can be brutal.
If the journey being pleasant matters to you, Alibaug wins on the ferry alone.
The landscape
Alibaug — sea, sand, palms, flat. Coastal and warm.
Lonavala — hills, valleys, cooler air, dramatic in monsoon.
Best season
Alibaug — winter is ideal. Monsoon is atmospheric. Summer is hot.
Lonavala — monsoon is the main event. Winter is pleasant. Summer is a relief from the city heat.
Food
Alibaug — seafood and coastal cooking, with genuinely good restaurants near Mandwa.
Lonavala — chikki, street food, and a lot of highway dhabas.
Which to choose
Choose Alibaug if you want the sea, seafood, a proper sundowner, and a slower pace.
Choose Lonavala if you want hills and green, and you are going in monsoon.
If you land on Alibaug, we are two minutes from Mandwa Jetty, open 8:30am to 11pm.
